INTRODUCTION

The Salvation Mission is a Non-Profit Organization registered in Social Welfare Council (SWC) in Nepal Government. There is a Board of Director in the Salvation Mission (Consisting of 6 members with Chairman, secretary and Treasurer) which is responsible, work and run to this organization. This Mission is same as we know The Salvation Army in other country. The Nepal Government prohibit to use Army as its name, (one of the rebellion movement name is Salvation army) it change only ‘Army’ to ‘Mission’. So, it became The Salvation Mission.

It started Evangelism in Nepal from 2009, and started working in social work since the Nepal earthquake on 15th April 2015. The Government of Nepal has awarded it worked and sent Appreciation Certificate to the Mission too. After the situation calmed down, the other relief workers were ordered to return home while the Salvation Mission was ordered to continue their work by the Nepal Government. It continue working to help the people and do social work till today.[1]

As a Christian Organization, it has done its best to preach the gospel and has led many people into the salvation of Christ.

1. TITLE

STUDY OF THE SALVATION MISSION WORK IN KATHMANDU FROM 2015-2024

2. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The Salvation Mission has done a lot of social work in Nepal especially in Kathmandu, and has spent a lot of money, but there is no book or study paper available to read for people. That is why Local people, even the Christians also don't know much about its work. This research is the first academic attempt to study the work of The Salvation Mission in Kathmandu. Therefore, academic writing is very important.

3. ELABORATION OF THE PROBLEM:

The Salvation Mission has done tremendous social work in different location of Nepal, but its scope is too wide for the whole of Nepal, we will focus and concentrated on Kathmandu City. Documents and sources are not much available and research has not been yet done on this subject. Therefore, interviews and sources will have to be translated into English too.

The Salvation mission had implemented Tailoring and after school programme under women and child development project till today. Later in 2015, Beauty Parlour and Sister’s café was established and also provides the humanitarian response and relief to those who are affected by 7.8 Magnitude Earthquake in Kathmandu.

This research is proposed to be conducted in the hope that it will be useful for those who are studying Salvation Mission Social Work or social worker, NGOs and Churches in the future.

4. PURPOSE STATEMENT.  This research has highlighted the work and contribution of The Salvation mission especially social work in Kathmandu, Nepal. The aim is to show the good results of that social work and the progress of the beneficiaries.

5. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROBLEM

As it is written in the registration that the company will only serve Nepali people. The Salvation Mission in Kathmandu has done a lot of work for citizens of Nepali. The funds for these works are mostly received from the UK and the US. There is no exact research on the outcomes of this work, status of those who have benefited from these activities or who become self-reliant and got a profession and different kind of skills adopted by the work has not reveal and studied yet. That is likely to be useful for the mission whether is it successful or not, to be continue or not?

6. THE RESEARCH QUESTIONS.

6.1. What is the overall  purpose of the Nepal Salvation Mission?

6.2. How much it spent money for the Social work during 2015-2024 in Kathmandu?

6.3. What social work has been done in Kathmandu since 2015?

6.4. How many people have benefited from it?

6.5. Can social work and evangelism be combined?

6.6. Did that social work serve its purpose or was it effective?

7. ASSUMPTIONS AND LIMITATIONS.

I am doing this research based on the social work done and going on by The Salvation mission in Nepal during 2015-2023. The work done before have really provided shelters and livelihood for the victim of natural disasters as well as poverty. And some of the ongoing projects are also done focusing to the vulnerable people around the society. The Salvation mission is a Christian mission but still it’s serving human kinds in Nepal without any discrimination in the name of religion, races or class. Even though Salvation mission is doing social work in many parts of Nepal but my research have only limit area i.e. Kathmandu, so it will focus only on this area. It limits only the social works and its outcomes not the ministerial part. It limits only the beneficiary not the whole society.

8. METHODOLOGY AND PROCEDURES.

The research will be conducted using primary sources and secondary sources. Secondarily, we will use office files, online articles related to the study and project reports. Primary data are collected using a mixed research methods i.e. Qualitative and Quantitative and methods. This research attempt to suggest effective interventions for The Salvation Mission in further Social Work.

First of all, interviews will be conducted with those who have been assisted and created employment opportunities through this social work (project). The interview will be of two types for the beneficiary, provider and the one who manage all those things during the project interval. The questions will be different for them. Meet as many people related to this social work within the framework as possible. Arrangements will be made to ensure that questions are answered correctly and make possible there will be no false information. Interviewer will not be a Salvation Mission employee.

Natural Disaster victims will be visited and the assistance received through the Salvation Mission will be identified. As it’s a Christian mission, evangelism development is also expected through this mission.

I will collect the data of The Salvation Mission 2015-2024 social work by visiting their office and from their office files and reports. It will also be able to know whether the results are good enough.

9. HYPOTHESIS

Social work has helped The Salvation mission in preaching the gospel. They had not faced opposition from the government till now as they are Christian organization it’s just because of their social work which they are doing without any discrimination in a Hindu country like Nepal. Doing good to others is also related to the theme of the Lord Jesus so the Salvation Mission are doing same here. As social work cannot be done without helping others in another  hand evangelism can be done without helping others. But this research will show that it is better to preach the gospel by helping those in need.

10. DEFINITION OF TERMS.

1. The Salvation Mission: The Salvation Army in Nepal commenced work in the Name of The Salvation Mission(TSM) in 2009. It is a Christian Church and international charitable organization structure in a quasi-military fashion.

2. Kathmandu: Kathmandu is the largest municipality and the capital of Nepal. It's also the only city in the country with the Mahanagar (Metropolitan City) municipal status. Kathmandu's 2024 population is now estimated at 1,621,642.[2]

3. Social work : work carried out by trained professionals with the aim of helping people who have social disadvantages or personal problems.[3]

4. Social Welfare Council: The Social Welfare Council is responsible for the promotion, facilitation, co-ordination, monitoring and evaluation of the activities of the non-governmental social organizations in Nepal.

11. LITERATURE REVIEW

Salvation mission have already done many works and it’s still doing in Nepal. Mostly, it has helped the victims of the earthquake in the name of God, but there is no any book or research paper available on their work. This research is going to be a new and first written research paper in the study of The Salvation Mission Social work in Kathmandu. I think it's challenging and difficult somehow, but if I succeed this thesis it will be a good way to showcase the mission's work to the younger and future generation. Even though yearly annual report book and project report book are available but they are not comprehensive enough. These are written by the Project officers at the time. The scope of Nepal is wide and the whole area cannot be covered, that’s why only Kathmandu area will be focused and target.
